Second Term Begins June 1, 2022

Brussels, March 24, 2022 -- EU leaders have re-elected Charles Michel as President of the European Council for a second term of two and a half years, beginning on June 1, 2022. Michel has served as chief of the EU Council since late 2019, leading the bloc through numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Michel's Achievements and Future Goals

During his first term, Michel played a key role in coordinating the EU's response to the COVID-19 crisis. He also oversaw the adoption of the EU's landmark climate change package, the European Green Deal. In his second term, Michel has pledged to continue to focus on economic recovery, climate action, and strengthening the EU's global role.

In a statement following his re-election, Michel said, "I am honored to have been entrusted with a second term as President of the European Council. I believe that the EU is stronger when we work together, and I am committed to leading the Council in continuing to build a more prosperous, sustainable, and secure future for all Europeans."
