KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers' College World Series hopes came to an end Tuesday night with a 4-3 loss to LSU in an elimination game at TD Ameritrade Park.

The Volunteers (49-12) took an early lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Drew Gilbert, but the Tigers (40-21) rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Tre' Morgan.

LSU took the lead for good in the sixth inning on a solo homer by Cade Doughty. The Volunteers threatened in the ninth inning, but LSU closer Devin Fontenot struck out Jake Rucker with the bases loaded to end the game.

The loss was a disappointing end to a season that saw the Volunteers win the SEC regular season championship and earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee will now look to regroup and prepare for next season.

For LSU, the win keeps their College World Series hopes alive. The Tigers will face Vanderbilt in the semifinals on Wednesday.
