Can a Sentence Make or Break Your Movie?
New Interview Reveals "It Ends With Us" Screenwriter's Biggest Regrets
Trouble adapting a best-selling novel?
In the world of book-to-screen adaptations, change is inevitable. But sometimes, a single line can make all the difference. Such is the case with the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's beloved novel, "It Ends With Us."
The screenwriter for the film, Christy Hall, recently revealed that a pivotal line from the book was left out of the screenplay. The line in question is a declaration by the protagonist, Lily, to her abusive partner, Ryle: "It ends with us."
According to Hall, the decision to cut the line was made in an effort to make the ending of the film less predictable. However, fans of the book were not happy with this change. They argued that the line was essential to Lily's character development and the film's overall message.
Hall has since acknowledged that she regrets leaving the line out of the film. She said, "I didn't have her say 'It ends with us.' However, this change didn't sit well with fans of Hoover's book."
